The priest (神父) of this temple was widely respected. When he grew old, he started searching for a younger priest to replace him after his death. However, much to his disappointment, he could not find any suitable person. As the priest lay on his deathbed, he called his assistant and told him, “After my death, make sure that only a ?human being? replaces me as the priest of this temple.” As soon as he said these words, he died. Information soon travelled far and wide. A day was set for the selection of the successor (继任者).That day, many people started coming to the temple. The route to the temple was full of thorns (荆棘) and stones. By the time most people reached the temple, they had had cuts on their feet and hands. By afternoon, as the selection process was about to end, one young man walked slowly into the temple. The assistant noticed him and said, “Young man, you are very late.” The man replied, “I know I am late, so I will not participate in the competition.” But the assistant was curious to know about this man. He asked again, “But how did you hurt yourself so badly? Didn't you follow the same route as the others?” “I did,” replied the man, “but I thought I must remove the thorns and sharp stones from the path so that when people come to pray in this temple they won't get hurt.” Hearing this, the assistant smiled and said, "Congratulations, you have been chosen.” This greatly annoyed the other participants. “How can you choose him as he has not gone through any of the tests??, they demanded. The assistant replied, “Our old priest used to say that only a ?human being? knows how to watch for other people's interests. All of you climbed the same path. But only this man thought about the others and cleared the path so that no one would get hurt. By this definition(定义), only he qualifies as a ?human being? and therefore only he should be the successor to the great old priest. ” 26. What happened immediately after the old priest died? A. B Boys' schools are the perfect place to teach young men to express their emotions and involve them in activities such as art, dance and music. Far from the traditional image of a culture of aggressive masculinity (阳刚), the absence of girls gives boys the chance to develop without pressure to conform to a stereotype, a US study says. Boys at single-sex schools were said to be more likely to get involved in cultural and artistic activities that helped develop their emotional expressiveness, rather than feeling they had to conform to the "boy code" of hiding their emotions to be a "real man". The findings of the study go against received wisdom that boys do better when taught alongside girls. Tony Little, headmaster of the British boys-only school, Eton, warned that boys were being failed by the British education system because it had become too focused on girls. He criticized teachers for failing to recognize that boys are actually more emotional than girls. The research argued that boys often perform badly in mixed schools because they become discouraged when their female peers do better earlier in speaking and reading skills. But in single-sex schools teachers can tailor lessons to boys? learning style, letting them move around the classroom and getting them to compete in teams to prevent boredom, wrote the study's author, Abigail James, of the University of Virginia. Teachers could encourage boys to enjoy reading and writing with "boy-focused" approaches such as themes and characters that appeal to them. Because boys generally have more acute vision learn best through touch, and are physically more active, they need to be given "hands-on" lessons where they are allowed to walk around, James found. Single-sex education also made it less likely that boys would feel they had to conform to a stereotype that men should be "masterful and in charge" in relationships. "In mixed schools boys feel compelled to act like men before they understand themselves well enough to know what that means," the study reported. 31. The author believes that a single-sex school _______. A. forces boys to hide their emotions to be "real men" B. helps to cultivate masculine aggressiveness in boys C. encourages boys to express their emotions more freely D. naturally reinforces in boys the traditional image of a man

It fails to give boys the attention they need. D. It places more pressure on boys than on girls. 34. According to Abigail James, one of the advantages of single-sex schools is ______. A. teaching can be tailored to suit the characteristics of boys B. boys can focus on their lessons without being distracted C. boys can choose to learn whatever they are interested in D. teaching can be designed to promote boys' team spirit 35. Which of the following is characteristic of boys according to Abigail James' report? A. They enjoy being in charge. C. They conform to stereotypes. B. They have sharper vision. D. They are violent and sexist. C If you were walking around a supermarket and saw a woman with a shaved head, a ring through her nose, a tattoo designed on her arm and she has a small child in her shopping trolley, what would your opinion be? Do you think this kind of body decoration is attractive or ugly? Different people have different ideas. The following are some examples of body decoration from around the world. In many parts of Africa, it is thought that an attractive girl should have really shinny skin. On Bali, a little island in Indonesia, they believe that a beautiful woman or a handsome man must have perfectly straight, flat teeth. The Balinese believe that teeth with pointed edges make you look like an ugly wild animal. So when a girl or boy becomes a teenager, he or she is taken to a special person in their village who will file off teeth points to make them smooth and flat. There is no anesthetic and this tooth filing is really painful. It is a kind of test. If you can stand it without screaming or crying too much, then you are thought ready to become an adult. In Myanmar, there is a small group of people who are called the "Padaung". They believe that a woman can only be really beautiful if she has a long neck. I mean a VERY long neck. Now you might think that you are either born with a long or short neck and that there's nothing whatever you can do about it. But you would be wrong! At around the age of 5, a Padaung girl has heavy metal rings fitted around her neck, tightly between the chin and shoulders. Each year more rings are added and very, very slowly their weight pushes the shoulders down, in this way making the neck look longer. A Padaung woman will wear her neck rings all her life, never once taking them off. So now I'm sure you will all agree that different people have different ideas about what is beautiful. 36. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 1? A. Women's design. A. handbag B. Beautiful body decoration. B. luggage
4/9

C. Attractive decoration. D. Body decoration. D. basket

37. What does the underlined word "trolley" in the first paragraph mean? C. shopping cart

In Apple?s case, developers can also obtain the location information for each photo. Claudia Bourne Farrell, an F.T.C. spokeswoman, said the agency had received the letter but she could not comment further. “It sends shivers up the spine to think that one?s personal photos, address book, and who knows what else can be obtained and even posted online without consent,” Mr. Schumer wrote in his letter to the F.T.C. “If the technology exists to open the door to this kind of privacy invasion, then surely technology exists to close it, and that?s exactly what must happen.” Mr. Schumer said if Apple and Google could not come to an agreement to fix the problem, then he would be forced to take the issue further. He said other companies had been willing to work with his office to fix issues. “I?m optimistic that we can get this changed without any regulation,” he said. “If it?s not changed, then we?ll look the F.T.C., and if that doesn?t work then we?ll look at legislative approach.” The F.T.C. has warned companies to try to be more vigilant(警醒的) in their efforts to protect consumers when it comes to privacy. 41.The senators spoke with officials at both Apple and Google A. to discuss whether it is illegal to have access to private information. I?m sure you remember your childhood well. However, there are reasons why children misbehave the way they do. One of the top reasons why children misbehave is because they want their parents (or the adults in question) to notice them. As adults, it?s easy for us to ignore children because we think that they?re just being naughty as usual. But that?s not always the case. When a child misbehaves, try to find out why he or she did it in the first place and find out the root of the problem. Scolding them without even asking or knowing the whole story is not good for either children or adults. Sometimes, children misbehave simply because they?ve got too much extra energy in them. They end up doing anything and everything they can because they?ve got nothing else to do. Another undeniable reason why children misbehave is because they?ve seen other people do it. Kids, especially the really young ones, like to copy other people around them.

I’m writing to tell you about a recent discussion we have had on whether or not university students should be financially independent. 60% of the students think that university students don’t have to be financially independent, because trying to make money will affect their studies. They also think they can repay their parents in the future. 25% of my classmates hold the view that doing part-time jobs will help one gain work experience and learn more of the society. Besides, when students find it hard to make money, they won’t waste their money. 15% of the students, including myself, all think that as grown-ups, we should not depend on our parents any more, but if our parents can afford to pay the tuition fee for us, we should put our studies in the first place. Thank you for reading my letter. Yours , Li Hua

【读写任务】 Kids misbehave from time to time and they do so for various reasons. Some want adults to notice them while others have extra energy or want to copy other people’s behaviour. The passage reminds me of my experience in when I was ten. One day, out or curiosity, I stole a cigarette from my elder brother and smoke secretly in the washing room. Unfortunately, my father discovered what I did and I was afraid that I would be severely punished. However, my father only told me that kids were not allowed to smoke and I shouldn’t do it any more. I nodded in agreement. After that incident, I realized that I was wrong and I never did the silly thing again. And I appreciated how my father handled the problem very much. Had he beaten me, I would have become rebellious and actually taken up smoking. As far as I am concerned, adults should deal with the misbehaviours of kids properly. For one thing, they should teach kids to tell right from wrong and prevent kids from making mistakes in the first place. For anther thing, they should give kids a chance to correct themselves or ask kids to do some good deeds in return for the misbehaviour.
