Due to his old age, he was going bald, which made him feel too cold to swim in the pool. Therefore, biologists at the academy had a wet suit created for this penguin to help him get back in the swimming pool. Unlike marine mammals, which have a layer of blubber to keep them warm, penguins depend on their waterproof feathers. Without them, Pierre was unwilling to jump into the swimming pool and ended up trembling on the side of the pool while his 19 peers played in the water. “He was cold; he would shake,” said Pam Schaller, a senior biologist. Schaller first tried a heat lamp to keep Pierre warm. Then she got another idea: if wet suits keep humans warm in the cold Pacific, why not make one for Pierre?

Schaller designed the suit, which covered Pierre’s body and had small openings for his flippers. “I would walk behind him and look at where there were any gaps, and cut and refit and cut and refit until it looked like it was extremely suitable,” she said. One concern was that the other penguins would reject Pierre in his new suit, but in fact, they accepted his new look. He swam freely and got along with others well, although he was the only penguin with a black stomach. Schaller couldn’t say for sure whether the wet suit allowed Pierre to recover his fine feathers, but “certainly we were able to keep him comfortable during a period of time that would have been very difficult for him to stay comfortable”. Pierre will take off his suit after his new feathers grow back. 41. Pierre felt too cold to swim in the pool because of . B The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on the earth, is of great importance

to African ecosystem(生态系统). Unlike other animals, the African elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plan-teater, it largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原) surroundings in which it lives, therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its habitat. It is the elephant’s great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the 300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and underbushes, and pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas(热带草原). In these open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of other plant-eaters. Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food as well. What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening the whole ecosystem. 46. What is the passage mainly about? A. Disappearance of African elephants. B. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants. C. The effect of African elephants’search for food. D. The eating habit of African elephants. 47. What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean? A. Fixing the time. B. Worsening the state. C. Improving the quality. D. Deciding the conditions. 48. What do we know about the open spaces in the passage? A. They result from the destruction of rain forests. B. They provide food mainly for African elephants. C. They are home to many endangered animals. D. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds. 49. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE? A. The African elephant is the largest animal on the earth. B. African elephants have 300 pounds of plants every day, including small trees and underbushes. C. The African elephant is in a way the builder of the environment like other land animals. D. If the African elephant disappears, the whole ecosystem won’t be affected. 50. The passage is developed mainly by .

A. showing the effect and then explaining the causes B. pointing out similarities and differences C. describing the changes in space order D. giving examples C As civilization proceeds in the direction of technology, it passes the point of supplying all the basic essentials of life—food, shelter, clothes and warmth. Then we are faced with a choice between using technology to provide and fulfill needs which have now been regarded as unnecessary or, on the other hand, using technology to reduce the number of hours of work which a man must do in order to earn a given standard of living. In other words, we either raise our standard of living above that necessary for comfort and happiness or we leave it at this level and work shorter hours. I shall take it for granted that mankind has, by that time, chosen the latter alternative. Men will be working shorter and shorter hours in their paid employment. It follows that the housewife will also expect to be able to have more leisure in her life without lowering her standard of living. It also follows that human domestic servants will have completely ceased to exist. Yet the great majority of the housewives will wish to be relieved completely from the routine operations of the home such as scrubbing the floors or the bath of the cooker, or washing the clothes or washing up, or dusting or sweeping, or making beds. By far the most logical step to relieve the housewife of routine is to provide a robot which can be trained to the requirements of a particular home and can be programmed to carry out half a dozen or more standard operation, when is switched by the housewife. 51. As civilization develops in the direction of technology, . A. the basic essentials of life must be supplied B. it is important to supply the basic essentials of life C. it is no longer so important as it was in the past to supply all the basic essentials of life D. it is not necessary to supply the basic essentials of life 52. According to the author, we are faced with . A. the choice of providing and fulfilling our needs B. the choice of using technology C. the choice of earning a standard of living D. a choice between using technology to provide and fulfill needs to reduce the number of working hours 53. What alternative will mankind have chosen in future? A. To leave our standard of living at this level and work shorter hours. B. To raise our standard of living. C. To fulfill needs which have been regarded as unnecessary. D. To lower our standard of living and work shorter hours.

54. Now most housewives wish to . A. stop doing their housework B. do more housework to improve their life C. get rid of the heavy burden of their housework D. do only simple and light housework 55. It can be inferred that robots will be invented . A. to take the place of housewives B. to help manage a family C. to do the routine of housework instead of human D. to provide the daily necessities for man D 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。 Ancient Rome was one of the world’s most powerful empires more than 2,000 years ago.The Romans’ ideas about roads, laws, government and buildings still influence us today.
